What to Know Before Buying a Smart Toilet

por EPLOINC

Smart toilets are nice — heated seats, warm water, the works. But getting one installed isn't as simple as swapping out your old toilet. A few things need to line up first, and it's much better to find out before you order than after the plumber shows up.

Here's what to check.

1. Check Your Toilet Rough-In Size

This is the big one. The toilet rough-in is the distance from the wall behind the toilet to the center of the drain pipe. A 12-inch rough-in is common in U.S. homes, but it's worth measuring yours rather than assuming. Older homes and some bathroom layouts can have different rough-in dimensions.

Grab a tape measure and check before you buy anything. If the rough-in doesn't match the toilet's specifications, installation may require additional plumbing work — or the toilet may simply not be a good fit for your bathroom.

Measure from the finished wall to the center of the toilet drain, rather than measuring from the baseboard.

2. Check Your Bathroom Space

Smart toilets can have different dimensions and lid mechanisms than standard toilets.

Before you commit, measure:

  • Front clearance — can you actually sit down and stand up without hitting the sink or door?

  • Side clearance — at least a little breathing room on both sides.

  • Door swing — open the bathroom door all the way and make sure it clears the toilet.

  • Wall and cabinet space — the lid needs room to open fully.

It sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people skip this step.

3. Water Supply

Smart toilets still need water — both for flushing and for the bidet function. Check where your existing supply line is and whether it'll reach the new toilet's inlet.

If your house has low water pressure, pay attention to the model's specs. Some smart toilets have built-in pumps or pressure-assist systems to help maintain consistent washing performance, while others rely more heavily on your home's existing water pressure.

4. Do Smart Toilets Need Electricity?

This is where smart toilets differ most from regular ones. They need power. Heated seat, bidet washing, dryer, night light, and electronic auto-flush functions all require electrical power.

Check the product's voltage requirements (Many smart toilets sold in the U.S. are designed for 120V electrical systems), how long the power cord is, and whether there's a grounded outlet near the toilet. Bathrooms often don't have one in the right spot.

If you're not sure, get an electrician to look at it before installation. Running a new line to a bathroom isn't a DIY job.

5. Which Features Do You Actually Want?

Once you've confirmed the toilet will physically fit, it's time to think about features. The list can get long — and so can the price tag.

Features many buyers look for include:

  • Heated seat

  • Adjustable water temperature and pressure

  • Warm-air dryer

  • Auto-flush

  • Night light

  • A bowl that's easy to clean

Not every feature will be useful to every household. Consider which functions you'll actually use before paying extra for features such as user presets, or built-in deodorization.

6. Check the Smart Toilet Installation Requirements

Last thing: before you click "order," read through the installation manual or spec sheet. Confirm the rough-in, dimensions, water connection, electrical requirements, and what parts are included (some toilets don't come with a supply line or wax ring).

If your bathroom has an odd layout — offset drain, weird wall angle, old plumbing — just pay for professional installation. It'll cost more upfront, but you'll save yourself a headache.

Quick Checklist

Before you buy, can you say yes to all of these?

  • Rough-in matches?

  • Toilet fits the space?

  • Clearance on all sides?

  • Water supply compatible?

  • Outlet nearby (or electrician lined up)?

  • Installation requirements checked?

A smart toilet is a nice upgrade, but only if it actually fits your bathroom. Spend ten minutes measuring first — it's a lot cheaper than dealing with a heavy toilet that's already been delivered.
